Design X Social ’22
Dhaaga
Project Summary
Problem Identified
Every time you buy a new dress or a top, think what it is doing to our planet Earth! 92 million tons of textile waste is created each year. The fashion sector has seen striking growth with over 100 billion garments being produced worldwide every year. According to the data released by The Indian Textile Journal, it is estimated that every year, more than 1 million tons of textiles are thrown away, with most of this coming from household sources. 700 gallons of water is required to make one t-shirt, that is worth water drunk by a person for 3 years! This slow paced crisis needed an immediate solution.
Design Innovation
Introducing, Dhaaga is a platform that ensures a step towards sustainable lifestyle while catering to the post-consumer textile waste crisis. You can easily repurpose all those clothes lying in your closet by scanning them and getting the best recommendations of what you can do with it. The system also provides pick up and delivery service and makes donating much more easier in just a few clicks. The reward system let's you get cash backs or redeem them as discounts giving you feedback on how much you have contributed to saving the planet and how many people you have helped. With Dhaaga, we aim to make a difference one stitch at a time.
Impact On The Society
1. Reduce carbon emissions by repurposing instead of production of new products. 2. Upskilling youth by tie-ups through NGOs for their tailoring services. 3. Helping make the transition from fast to slow fashion by increasing accessibility and spreading awareness. 4. Fulfilling needs of underprivileged by redirecting excess urban textile waste.
