Design X Social ’22
OFF-ROAD
Project Summary
Problem Identified
Road accidents have been the leading cause of deaths worldwide in the last three decades. This prompted us as design students to look into this crisis and understand how can we help save those in road accidents in a country where one death occurs every four minutes and the resources are already limited.
Design Innovation
After doing thorough research and interviewing victims of road accidents as well as medical professionals, we were able to pinpoint on the areas where we would require design intervention to help reduce fatality loss. A major problem area that stood out was the time right after the accident has taken place. Bystanders play an important role right after the accident has taken place but, the unawareness of medical emergency numbers in India and correct first aid among bystanders can prove to be problematic, especially during a life-or-death situation. Brainstorming as a team led us to the innovative solution – ‘Sahayak’.
Impact On The Society
Sahayak can be introduced as a system upgrade for all phones across India, proving to be a must tool during road accidents. Through smartphone technology ‘Sahayak’ will be able to detect accidents, place calls to the ambulance and the victim’s emergency contact, alert phones near the accident area via Bluetooth, and provide guided first aid assistance for bystanders. ‘Sahayak’ can be vital in saving someone’s life and providing them with the right medical care till the ambulance arrives.
